cannot help but take our personal knowledge of the people involved and apply that preconceived belief to our final assessment. However when viewing pieces of literature one is left with
the ability to be much more objective because one does not know the protagonists personally. Two works of literature, "Legend of the Moors" and "Young Goodman Brown", allow us
to evaluate the goodness and weakness of man without the prejudice of personal knowledge.The men in these two stories illustrate how deeply our central character is ingrained in us.
In both stories the men who are the center of the story are not the type of men we generally consider heroes. In Goodman Browns story he is
portrayed as a weak and innocent man who doe not step outside the boundaries to explore life at all. He is not a bad man, in fact he is rather
steadfast and honorable in that he would never do anything that was not in keeping with the life of the village and his upbringing. Peregil , who was
the main character in Legend of the Moors is a similar man. He is hard working but not ambitious or goal driven. In addition he is honest and compassionate.
As he hauls water through the village he is greeted by many who know him. Some of course treat him like a servant but by and by
he is respected for his character and strong moral values. Both men live their lives devoid of deceit or the desire to trample others to
get ahead. They are not looking for change when change befalls them, one in the way of a stranger in need of help, the other in the way of
