looks at this issue from more of the male perspective while Moll Flanders is about a woman who leads a life of crime. Both of these novels are interesting in that they rather accurately describe what life in 18th century England was really like. The descriptions of the people and places as well as much of the information about crime itself is all derived from accurate information. The Criminal World in Moll Flanders Moll begins her life at a great disadvantage because she is born to a transported convict, and therefore is exposed to a world of crime right from the beginning of her life. What is especially important to note, is that this story takes place during the 18th century, and at that time is was much worse to be the child of a convict than it would be today. At that time, these children were simply destined to follow the same path as their parents because there was no alternative for them. There was no protection for them or foster homes. These children had to fend for themselves if their parents were in jail or if they just didnt pay attention to them. There was no such thing as government agencies in those days that would provide help for these children. In this novel, Moll is extremely lucky in that the church does take her in. Because she has no skills, she becomes a maid but is paid little. She does eventually marry (out of economic necessity) but is widowed. Moll does end up marrying again but what is ironic about this situation is that the man she marries actually spends all of her money and she goes ...
