In fact, study of Norse mythology presents compelling similarities to Greek myths, and this is perhaps most evident in a comparison of Zeus and his Nordic counterpart, Odin. In
this way, consideration of the similarities and differences of these mythological characters will reveal how Norse mythology evolved from Greek myths to create a very similar ideology.
The word "myth" itself is derived from the Greek word "mythos", which means a story of forgotten or vague origin that is supernatural or
religious (Norse Mythology vs. Greek Mythology, 2004). Essentially then, a myth is a made-up story that is created to explain or rationalize some aspect of the world (Norse Mythology
vs. Greek Mythology, 2004). However, although we can now understand these myths to be fictional given the advantage of time, the people of the societies that created such myths
believed in them intensely (Norse Mythology vs. Greek Mythology, 2004). The similarities between Zeus and Odin are dramatic. They are
both very similar in appearance - they are both large and powerful and they even both have beards (Zeus and Odin, 2004). In fact, their beards are their signature
feature and illustrate a very connectedness to the people they govern in their respective societies (Zeus and Odin, 2004). Their beards are what connect them to the common man
