its population being Muslim.1 Clearly, this reveals just how pervasive Islam is throughout the Southeast Asia region, and most specifically in Indonesia and the Philippines. The association between
Islam and Southeast Asia however, has a long and complex history. The influence of Islam in Southeast Asia dates back
to the 13th century, when Moslem merchants from Persia and Gujarat began to go to Indonesia and other Asian ports, thereby establishing trade links.2 This link not only provided
access to trade, but the Persians also brought with them their Islamic faith, which they propagated.3 The spread of Islam was further encouraged by the fact that many of
the traders ended up marrying women from these ports, thereby propagating Islam even more and entrenching it within the very fabric of Southeast Asian society.4 This influence was so
powerful that they even caught the attention of kings, many of whom they converted from their native Hindu to Islam.5
The very first king to be such a convert was the Sultan of Demak, and after his own conversion he would then spread the word about Islam as well.6
He was so devout in his beliefs, that eventually he caused the downfall of the Majapahit kingdom, which had been very powerful.7 This downfall however, spurred the growth of
Islam even further.8 And yet, in todays world there are clear differences between the way Islam has manifested in Indonesia
and the Philippines. While in many ways these differences are subtle, there are others that are quite pronounced. In either case, Islam in both Indonesia and the Philippines
