is interesting to see how similar these characters actually are in that they both lived for the love of their sons and yet brought pain and suffering to their sons
as a result. Gertrude and Jocasta Understanding the character of Hamlets Gertrude is an exercise in complexity. It is
easy to dismiss this character as evil, and yet, upon reflection it is apparent that weak is perhaps a more appropriate term (Hamlet: The Character of Gertrude, 2002). It
is clear throughout the course of this play that her son is very important to her and she loves him very much (Hamlet: The Character of Gertrude, 2002).
Hamlets father was murdered by Claudius, and very quickly after this Hamlets mother, Gertrude, marries Claudius. At first blush, the reader
is easily disposed to disliking Gertrude for condoning such a horrific act. However, there is indeed no evidence in this play that she was aware of the murder at
all. However, Hamlet does not see it this way and becomes very angry with his mother for marrying Claudius. Because of this, Hamlet becomes more aggressive and more
violent towards her, in order to try and control her (Gertrude and Hamlet, 2002). However, despite how cold and unfeeling Gertrude appears
