However, this is not necessarily so. While the work of Freud and Bergson cannot be defined as hard science, neither is it the result entirely of speculation or conjecture.
Both Freud and Bergson indeed took their inquiries seriously and were indeed indebted to science and to rational forms of inquiry.
Therefore, the following is very insightful in terms of better understanding these men, their philosophies, and the complexity of their ideas. These ideas did not simply hatch,
they were the result of inquisitive minds which set about imposing rigid standards of inquiry. Freuds Ego and Id Freud
was very interested in how the mind worked, and he believed the mind to be in constant conflict with itself (Stevenson, 2002). This, he believed, was the source of
human unhappiness and anxiety (Stevenson, 2002). As Freud investigated the internal conflicts of people, he came to develop his well-known theory of the id, ego and super-ego (Stevenson, 2002).
These three represented the three conflicting internal tendencies (Stevenson, 2002). Obviously, these three separations are not actual, physical
separations in the mind. Rather, they are elements of the mind (Stevenson, 2002). This is a prime example of Freud, the "irrationalist" using science and rational inquiry to
