What conventions do you think are a reflection of that era and seem out of place by todays standards? Dumbo (1941) was created at a time when the nation was entrenched in a war. This is significant. Laird and Everett remark that the opening scene of this feature shows "a sky full of parachuting baby animals that bears a striking resemblance to World War II newsreel footage" (221). Other war related images are embedded into this film that demonstrates issues with the circus train journey (Laird and Everett 221). In the film "Dumbo accidentally drinks some beer" (Laird and Everett 221). During the period, it was not only war that would invade cartoons, but adult social conventions were clear. This would be a scene out of place in todays day and age where there is a war on drugs and drunk driving. Of course, interestingly, the time in which Dumbo was made was about two decades after prohibition. The idea of alcohol abstinence was thought about and rejected. Clearly, it is rejected in this animated film as well and in fact, alcohol is flaunted, despite the fact that the cartoon is made for a young audience. Dumbo also has a "drunken vision" (Laird and Everett 221). Yet, while this would again be out of place in todays cartoons, it is perhaps appropriate to include a negative view of alcohol. Still, the fact that alcohol is an issue at all really does go to the times. In fact, down the road, Le Beau would note that of Disney films surveyed, Dumbo was one of two which is thought to show an inordinate amount of alcohol use. ...
