Thomas Beckett. The Pardoner and the Parson are among those making this trek. The pilgrimage is difficult and fraught with obstacles, and so in order to make the time pass more pleasantly, the travelers share their tales. Comparing and contrasting the tales of the Pardoner and the Parson reveal some similarities and a great many differences between these two characters. The Pardoner reveals himself in his dialogue to be a great cynic. His story is that of his own confession, which unfolds with great harshness. The Pardoner makes no pretenses about his mission or his life, easily revealing his desire to preach for the material success it brings. In other words, he doesnt truly care about people, their souls, the eternal hereafter, or any other such noble cause. He cares strictly for their money and for what his profession yields him personally. The Pardoner has accomplished his goals brilliantly. He has made much money in the course of his preaching, and even boasts about his contacts with popes and other dignitaries. He is an imposter, and absurdly proud of it. He almost relishes the fact that he finally has the opportunity to share what he considers to be his innate brilliance. He knows that this pilgrimage is definitely not an ordinary situation, and he will likely never see these people again after the trip, so he is able to be forthcoming in the telling of his life story, and in this way takes pride in his ability to dupe others so successfully.
