This is evidenced by comparing and contrasting the educational criticisms and philosophies of both Rousseau and Bloom, both of whom have delved into this topic and arrived at very definite opinions about the state of education. Jean Jacques Rousseaus, Emile, is one of the classic texts regarding education, and continues to be an important reference for academics. Rousseau is credited with not only laying the foundation for educational critique and criticism, but also with influencing many other notable works on the subject, such as that of Allan Bloom. Rousseau postulates the strikingly simple notion that children should be the focus of education, but the ramifications of this philosophy are anything but simple. Rousseau contends that education is meaningless without maintaining the focus of the child. To lose such focus is to lose the whole purpose of education in the first place. Furthermore, he contends that much of the unfavorable state of the world is due to the problems that exist within education. In other words, if children in the world were better educated, then by extension so too would the world be a better place to be. Rousseaus philosophies were controversial and dramatic for his time. Rousseau lived in an era when schooling and education was rote, and disciplined, and very harshly delivered. There was little focus on creativity and the needs and abilities of the students, but rather far more emphasis was placed upon the strict dissemination of facts and figures.
