her child does not eliminate her despair. She is representative of the oppression and confinement that women of the 1800s had to endure, and in this way the story
provides a social commentary as well. This character is confined to the yellow bedroom of the attic, and she studies daily the intricate pattern of the wallpaper as there
is little else for her to do. As the story progresses, it is clear the this patterned yellow wallpaper drives her crazy. One of the important themes of
this story is the fact that, despite the limitations of her mental condition (which could be defined as post-partum depression by todays standards) and the confinement forced upon her by
her husband, she is determined not to let her life be a waste. Life is very much more exciting now
than it used to be. You see I have something more to expect, to look forward to, to watch (Gilman, 2004).
She writes as a means of being productive in some manner and in this way she proves to herself and to the
world that she is a success. This character then stands as a powerful example of women from that era who were given few choices but clearly her strength was
evident despite that fact. Similarly, the character of Louise in The Story of an Hour, is also a strong and determined
woman. The news of her husbands death is certainly sad to her, but more than anything it is liberating. This too is indicative of the era, and therefore
