enter the workforce, the societal evaluation of the worth of her work declined. While for most of the twentieth century, the stance of society was that a womans place was
in the home, women have, nevertheless, been venturing into the workforce since the nineteenth century. The womens movement did a great deal to point out the social inequalities in the
American system, it is still a fact that, despite decades of so-called progress, women still earn less than men, a lot less. In many ways, they are still regarded --as
they were in the nineteenth century -- as a cheap workforce. When manufacturing took off in the nineteenth century, factories needed cheap, unskilled labor. Girls and women
were actively recruited from all over New England to work in textile factories (Robinson, 1997). The work was long and hard and the working conditions were noisy and often
unhealthy, yet these young women considered themselves to be lucky (Dublin, 1994). At the time, society was still completely patriarchal and a womans choices were extremely restricted. Surprisingly, the wages
that these girls and women were paid were considered high at that time. As long as labor was scarce, workers were too valuable to be ill-treated (Robinson, 1997). The
patriarchal nature of the time can be seen in the reasons that the women worked in the mill. The prevailing incentive was to secure paid wages was so that a
