not every business may make use of the full scope of IT functionality, most organizations will derive some value from at least maintaining a web presence, such that decisions such as which server architecture to implement are a critical aspect of business strategy. This paper will explore the differences between using UNIX and Windows in server architecture. This paragraph helps the student begin to address the issue of programmability. One of the most important considerations for which server architecture to utilize is programmability. No server hardware is going to be ready to fully service the needs of an organization "right out of the box". Rather, its functionality will have to be tweaked by the IT department to meet exacting specifications that are exclusive to the operations and functionality demanded by the organization in question. For this reason, the ability of the IT department to effectively interact with and change the dimensions of the server architecture, the more flexible and adaptive that server will be, and a more flexible server will ultimately impart more bottom line value to the organization. For this reason, "programmability" is used as a major determinant of which server type to utilize, and above all else, "primarily determines which hosting platform one should use" (Boston Computing Network, 2011). To begin with, it should be noted that both UNIX and Windows share a similar point of origin in that both are kernel-based hosting platforms (Microsoft, 2006). Kernels are sets of functions related to common system calls that "provide... base functionality" for server systems (Microsoft, 2006). The majority of tasks required by users, including "process management, memory management, thread management, scheduling, I/O management, and power management" are handle by kernels (Microsoft, 2006).
