century movies based on Shakespeare’s “Romeo and Juliet” that are easily remembered
and compared because of their distinctive style and presentation. In 1968, Franco
Zeffirelli created a lush costume extravaganza that told the Romeo and Juliet story (in the
U.S., it was released in 1974. In 1996, Australian director Baz Luhrmann presented a
much more stylized interpretation titled William Shakespeare’s Romeo + Juliet.
Characteristics of both movies are presented. Bibliography lists one source.

has captivated audiences for centuries. In fact, the Internet Movie Database lists 31 feature films and 11 made-for-TV movies (Internet source). Two Well-Known Movies Two 20th century
movies are easily remembered and compared since they essentially span an entire generation. The teenagers who either wanted to look like Olivia Hussey or date Olivia Hussey remember Franco Zeffirellis
lush costume extravaganza that told the Romeo and Juliet story on the big screen in 1974 (in the U.S. -- it was originally released in Italy as Giulietta e Romeo
in 1968). It was particularly unique because it was the first major movie production in which the actors playing Romeo and Juliet were actually the age of the characters in
the play rather than already established and older actors. It seems only logical now but was a wildly radical move in 1968. Twenty-two years later, the teenage daughters and
sons of the people in the Zeffirelli audience were introduced to the play through Australian director Baz Luhrmanns much more stylized interpretation titled William Shakespeares Romeo + Juliet (as if
there were another author?) that starred Leonardo DiCaprio and Clair Daines in the title roles. It is worth noting that Leonardo DiCaprio had not yet become a mega-star when this
movie was produced so it was not just created as a "vehicle" to market him. Instead, the audience sees the unique style of Luhrmann that has now become so famous
