the same event, but also utilizing the same sources. On 6 August 2011 a riot broke out in Tottenham, the area in the
north of London in the UK, this was followed by disturbances on the following day in Brixton. Two Australian citizens were in the area on Sunday, 7 August, attending a
street party. Both articles report on the riot of the second night, telling the story of the two Australian women. The Age takes
an initially apparently objective approach. The headline "Australias caught in London riots" is highly factual, with the first paragraph summarizing the content of the article in a concise manner,
telling the audience that their two Australian women were caught up in riots that they states came "from nowhere", and that they and others were left injured.
The article goes on to give factual details. The first of the women is Amie Thompson aged 26 years from Perth, who was a
schoolteacher who had been living in Brixton for 16 months, who is quoted as stating she is only 300 metres from where it all "kicked off". Amie, along with the
second Australian was called Joanne, age 25 were at a street party at around 5:15 PM local time. By giving personal details of the individuals the article is facilitating identification
and the development of empathy, creating interest in an event the other side of the world, which would otherwise be viewed as relatively remote and hold a low level of
