to take his readers with him into some very weird and terrifying places. This paper compares two of his best known short stories, "The Tell-Tale Heart" and "The Masque
of the Red Death." Discussion We want to answer a few questions about the stories, including who the protagonist is, what the dramatic question is, and the central conflict.
Its not as obvious as you might think. First, the "protagonist" is not the same as a hero. "Hero" is the word used to describe someone who is
associated with good qualities and being on the right side; but a "protagonist" is simply the main character. And a good thing, since there are no heroes in these
stories. Lets take the "Tell-Tale Heart" first. In this story, a young man decides to murder the older man he lives with. Were not sure of the relationship
here: it could be master and servant, father and son, or even lovers (though thats unlikely); at any rate they live in the same house (Poe). The
protagonist tells us he loved the old man, and yet he hated him enough to destroy him (Poe). The reason for his crime is that the old man had
a "filmy" eye, and in the narrators mind, it became an "evil" eye (Poe). The narrator, who is obviously mentally ill, decided he had to rid himself of this
horrible thing, and so smothered the old man, at least partly dismembered him, and hid his body under the floorboards (Poe). A neighbor reported to the police that
hed heard a shriek, but when they came to investigate, everything was neat and orderly (Poe). The police asked questions with the narrator answered calmly, but as they continued
