Chartres Cathedral are often referred to as "sermons in stone," because they express through their construction mans longing for God. Their towering spires reach toward heaven while their stained glass
windows remind worshippers of the beauty of the heavens. Hagia Sophia is almost 600 years older than Notre Dame and is now a mosque, though it began life as
an early Christian church. It too is a building of surpassing beauty, marked by one of the largest unsupported domes in the world. Its odd, then, that we will look
at these two monuments to religion and compare them to the horrors of Dantes Inferno. Discussion If we put floor plans of Notre Dame and Hagia Sophia side by side,
we see a significant difference in them. Notre Dame is almost a perfect rectangle, while Hagia Sophia is almost square, with an irregular outline where walls jut out; in the
center of the structure is a circle indicating the huge dome overhead. An irregular half-circle is located at either end of the dome, indicating semi-circular chambers. Two of Notre
Dames most important features are its windows and its buttresses. Notre Dame has one of the loveliest stained glass windows in the world: the rose window in the west fa?ade.
But it also has a number of large clerestory windows that allow light to flood into the building. (A clerestory window is a window located near the ceiling, in a
wall that rises higher than the rest of the roof.) The windows light up the tall columns and "make the nave walls seem thin and create the weightless effect
