Conventional wisdom holds that the lessons best remembered are those that caused considerable pain at the time they were occurring. United States manufacturing learned very hard lessons indeed when
the American car-buying public discovered that they could have quality, fuel economy and low prices all in the same vehicle during the oil crisis of 1973-74. All of those
qualities were combined only in Japanese imports at the time, and Detroit was forced to provide not only similar products but also adopt some of the techniques used by the
Japanese. These changes spread throughout US business, changing the entire fabric of it. Britain did not experience the same wrenching - and forced - changes. What are some
key components that should be considered in foreign manufacturing? (Use internet resources to help in this response) In 1998, British consulting firm Blessing/White
surveyed 24 companies across several industries in the US and the UK (Bainbridge, 1998). Researchers found that all of the British firms reported being unable to find qualified employees,
compared to only 91 percent of US companies reporting the same problem. In 2001, British Engineering Employers Federation (EEF) conducted a study concluding
that "UK manufacturers productivity lags between 25 to 30 per cent behind US companies in the same sector" (Willmott, 2001; p. 3). The report, "Catching Uncle Sam - US
and UK Manufacturing Productivity," recommended that UK manufacturers alter their approaches to people management and adopt lean production techniques (Willmott, 2001). Lean manufacturing, of course, was one of the
