In situations like this an individual will shine or not; Lovell shone. There they were, 200,000 miles from the earth, and Lovell had to bring his crew together, he had to lead them to teamwork, no matter their fears. Lovell needed to communicate to ground control as well as to other crew members clearly and concisely. He had to follow orders and suggestions from the ground. Someone once said that an excellent leader is also an excellent follower because they know when someone else can help with the problem. Lovell brilliantly demonstrated every one of the leadership competencies and then some. He brought the crew together to work as a team, empowering them with equal input into possible solutions, to listen to each other, to follow directions and to be innovative and creative in the midst of very real potential devastation. Lovell also followed the suggestions of the ground crew, scientists and others working furiously to come up with a solution. Remember that it was the oxygen system that had failed (Keppler Associates, nd). Had the men become over-anxious, they would use more oxygen, thereby shortening the number of minutes they could stay alive. Lovell led them through this near-tragedy. He followed the directions of the problem solvers on the ground even though they sounded like they could not possibly work. Together, Lovell and the team modified the lunar module, making it a effective lifeboat, conserved their electrical power and water sufficiently so that they returned safely.
