story and the priest in LHerueuxs narrative both struggle find order in the chaos that makes up their everyday world environments. However, the characters differ markedly in the ways in
which they achieve order and handle chaos. The priest, who presumably should feel a calling to aid people, controls chaos by controlling and suppressing his own emotions, thereby alienating himself
from his own parents and, ultimately, losing his calling to his lifes work. In Johnsons story, on the other hand, an unlikely hero bring order to chaos and finds that
he has a true calling to save lives. It is clear from the beginning of LHeureuxs narrative that his priest protagonist feels uncomfortable with overt signs of humanity, which
include signs of emotion. He feels anxious and confused by the press of humanity that he has to cope with by being in a public place. The young priest is
so intent in controlling the emotionality of his meeting his parents in a public place that he tells his mother, "Ill just kiss you on the cheek -- dont touch
me -- and Ill shake hands with Dad, and then well turn and walk out of here" (LHeureux 310). Immediately, the priest can see that he has deeply hurt his
mothers feelings. Nevertheless, he never rectifies this error and remains increasingly more aloof from human concerns and true caring for other human beings for the rest of his life.
This contrasts sharply with the readers first meeting Georgie, a hospital orderly, who is so moved by the sight of the blood of strangers that he is moved to tears
(Johnson 274). When a man comes into the emergency room with a knife in his head, he is led in by Georgie. As this suggests, Georgie has an empathic response
