If an investment choice between to firms in a similar industry exists, a direct comparison ca be advantageous. In this paper there is an assessment of Tootsies and Hersheys. 2. Background 2.1 Tootsie The history of Tootsie Roll Industries, the manufacturer of the Tootsie roll along with an expanding range of other confectionary and candy items, started in 1896 by Leo Hirshfield. Born in Austria, Hirshfield moved to the US with a background in the making of hand crafted candy and started up a small candy shop in New York City (Tootsie, 2010). The core product was created at this stage, a long oblong chewy cansy that tasted of chocolate and was wrapped individually. These were sold at 1 penny each, the name for these, which became known as the Tootsie rolls came from Hirshfields young daughter who at the age of five coined the name as a nickname (Tootsie, 2010). The firm expanded from this modest beginning with the benefit of this core product and ongoing expansion, in 1931 the tootsies pop was launched.
