Discussion The worldview can be encapsulated very briefly: in Hamlet the worldview is essentially pessimistic while in Cervantes it is optimistic. The world of the Danish prince is one of darkness and danger, murder and political intrigue. In this world, instead of being welcomed home from school and taking his rightful place as king, Hamlet finds his father dead and his uncle on the throne. This in itself is strange: as the son of King Hamlet, Hamlet should have become king on his fathers death. But instead, his uncle Claudius takes power. Shakespeare doesnt really address this point but there is no doubt that when Hamlet returns to Elsinore for his fathers funeral, he finds his world upside down. He doesnt know who he can trust, he is uncertain of his proper course of action, and he says as much: "The time is out of joint-O cursed spite, / That ever I was born to set it right!" (I.v.188-189). Its not until he talks to his fathers Ghost that he learns the truth and the play races to its conclusion, with Hamlet, Gertrude, Claudius, Laertes, Ophelia, Polonius, Rosencrantz and Guildenstern all dead. This is a bleak, tragic world, which is why this play is often considered the model for all great tragedies. Cervantess world is much sunnier. Not only is it set in Spain as opposed to Denmark, which means that physically the environment is warmer and sunnier, but the story is a comedy. Don Quixote (we get the word "quixotic," meaning dreamy, from his name) lives in a world of illusion, where knighthood is still the order of the day, there are maidens to be rescued and giants ...
