the young United States" (Currie C6). Christopher Columbus (1451-1506), whose name has been anglicized and whose real name was Cristoforo Colombo, was a sailor who first took to
see as a teenager. Born in Genoa, Italy, to a weavers family, Columbus was undoubtedly influenced as a boy by the fact that Genoa was an important seaport (Granzotto 7).
Ships from Genoa traded throughout the Mediterranean region. This obviously influenced him more then his experiences helping his father at this loom. Columbus had little formal schooling, but he
knew how to read and white, and he taught himself both Spanish and Latin (Granzotto 7). Although Columbus is generally thought of as part of the great European age of
exploration, these voyages were just beginning to occur prior to Columbuss famous voyage. He may have been influenced by the voyages of Portuguese sailors down the African coast in the
1470s. Thomas Jefferson was born in Virginia on April 13, 1743 (Anonymous 554). Jeffersons father was a wealthy landowner and died when Jefferson was 14, leaving him 2,750 acres
in land and numerous slaves. Between 1760-1762, Jefferson attended the College of William and Mary, where he read the Greek and Latin classics. In 1769, he was elected to the
Virginia House of Burgesses (Anonymous 554). While Jefferson was born into the upper class, through his education and his political experience, he was undoubtedly exposed to and influenced by the
great philosophers of the Enlightenment, such as John Locke and Adam Smith. Tecumseh, who was born in the late eighteenth century, was one of the most successful of the
