human spirit and the role of hope in keeping people going in the face of adversity. For example, in Viramontes poignant story, the narrator recounts how she gave
care to her dying grandmother when she was an adolescent. The author uses the narrators perspective to show how the grandmothers home was a refuge for her, a place where
she felt loved and protected and the important role that this played in the narrators life. The importance of the grandmother, the narrators Abuelita, is further emphasized by the storys
conclusion. When Abuelita dies, the narrator/granddaughter tenderly undresses the body and cleans it personally in the bathtub. The narrator waits for the moths that her grandmother described to come and,
when they come, the narrator finds cathartic emotional release. She begins to cry, saying, "there, there, I said to Abuelita, rocking us gently, there, there" (Viramontes 31). In this manner,
Viramontes conveys that while the narrator is devastated by grief, the love given to her by her grandmother provides the strength to carry on. Similarly, Chekhov crafts a situation
