Case history: Identifying information : The client is a Caucasian woman in her early fifties, "Linda," who has presented herself for voluntary treatment. Linda asserts that she is seeking treatment because she does not know how to handle her 22-year-old daughter, who is the mother of a 3-year-old. Linda does not want to raise her granddaughter and resents her presence in her life. Presenting problem : Linda feels that the problems in her life are due to her daughters. She has one daughter who is 25 and one who is 22. The younger daughter as two children, for whom she does not have custody. Linda shares her 2-bedroom apartment with her granddaughter. (To the student: is this a third child? Notes say that 22-year-old daughter does not have custody of her 2 children.) The mother of the child is "in and out" of the clients apartment and is irresponsible in regards to the child. While Linda is willing to allow her daughter (who is a stripper) to make her own choices, she wants her daughter to place the child in foster care if she is unwilling to care for her because Linda is "ready to do her own thing" and does not want to care for others. Intake summary : Linda comes across as flirtatious and provocative in her dress, as her knee-high stockings showed through her dress. Her demeanor seems giggly and somewhat childish, which is incongruous with her stage in life. On the other hand, at points in the interview, she becomes loud and dominant in her manner, which fits with her assertion that she can be very vocal in her opinions, which "drives people crazy."
