While Wilson termed her book a novel, research scholarship has determined that it is largely autobiographical, as it follows the parameters of Wilsons own life. While Wilsons novel is officially
a novel and Jacobs an autobiography, they are very similar in that they each relate what race relations were like for them during their lifetimes and therefore offer readers a
glimpse into the sociological conditions under which African American lived during the antebellum era. The following examination of Wilsons Our Nig (1859) and Jacobs Incidents in the Life of a
Slave Girl (1861) indicates similarities, but also considerable differences in themes, particularly in regards to how both women perceived white men. While the protagonist in Wilsons novel is named
Alfrado and typically referred to as "Frado" or "Our Nig" and Jacobs preserves anonymity by using the name "Linda," for the purposes of this discussion, it will be assumed that
each text, it is the authors own experience and voice that is relevant, and that authors name will be used. Officially, there was no slavery in the antebellum North, as
slavery was sanctioned by law on in the Southern states. However, the state of indentured servitude in which Wilson passed her childhood can certainly be regarded accurately as a form
of slavery, as she was not free by any definition of this term and she was treated as property, in a manner that is equivalent to the conditions endured by
African Americans under slavery. Wilsons storyline in Our Nig can be summarized very briefly. The offspring of a white, Irish mother and an African American father, she is left
