But that would be a mistake. Mama Lola is a non-fiction picture of a modern day Vodou practitioner, while Mama Day is a fictional novel. This brief paper
compares and contrasts the two works. Discussion Mama Lola by Karen McCarthy Brown is a portrait of not only Mama Lola, but of the culture of which she is
a part. Its also an examination of the practice of Vodou, one of the worlds most misunderstood religions and its alternative healing tradition. What started as a research
project turned into a friendship, and Brown writes with affection about her subject. She describes the "life, religion and healing practices of Marie Therese Alourdes Macena Margaux Kowalski, also
known as Alourdes or Moma Lola, a priestess of Voodou, who emigrated to the U.S. from Port-au-Prince ... at the age of 24" (Clark, 2002). Perhaps the most important
part of this description is the phrase "healing practices," for the idea of Moma Lola and all women as healers is woven throughout the book. (Some of the chapters
dealing with healing are reconstructed, probably to preserve the patients privacy, so the book is partly fiction.) But mostly its the story of a remarkable woman who "serves the
spirits" (Brown, 2001, p. 49). The things we learn about Haitian culture can be disturbing (for instance, children go to work early and because their income is badly
needed, they are frequently beaten, sometimes severely), but overall the tone of the book is one of warmth and acceptance. Its somewhat scholarly, but never dry, because the personality
of Moma Lola comes through every page, and she is a generous, wise and loving person. Mama Day is very different. Its a work of fiction, and the authors
