each other. Truman believed in appealing to the people against special interest groups, including those representing big business, walking through the streets, and arguing directly with legislators to get bills
he wanted passed. Eisenhower preferred to avoid controversy considering it undignified to argue openly with legislators. He did not focus on using public support, instead he appointed people to do
that while he focused on larger policy issues, particularly international affairs. Favoring big business, he appointed members of large corporations to cabinet posts (Garraty 794).
Yet, both supported many of the same philosophies, for example they were both involved in promoting civil rights. Truman had spoken against segregation and for equal rights
throughout his political career and as President, established a Committee on Civil Rights in 1946. One of the primary objectives of this Committee was to put an end to the
lynching practices still common practice much of the South. The Committee, headed by Charles F. Wilson sought to have anti-lynching legislation passed. In 1957, Eisenhower supported the legislation to protect
voting rights for Blacks and other minorities (Garraty 806-807). Also, in 1957, Eisenhower supported the desegregation in schools law by sending Federal Military troops to Little Rock, Arkansas to monitor
the desegregation crisis and to enforce the integration of Little Rock High School (Garraty 810). Both Presidents had a significant impact in
terms of developing different national programs, many of which are still in practice in todays society. The "Fair Deal," for example, is a term that has come to be associated
