as well as the characteristics of the planets that make up the solar system. Unfortunately well have little time for more than a quick "tour" of some of the
most prominent features of each planet. Earth Earth is the third planet from the Sun and the only inhabited world in the solar system. The interior of the planet
is still not cool, despite the fact that its millions of years old. The Earth is active, as we can see by the volcanic activity that takes place frequently;
for example, as recently as spring of this year Mount St. Helens erupted again. Volcanoes change the face of the planet by creating new land, as lava flows down
the mountain or into the sea, where it forms islands. The five continents "float" on huge formations known as "tectonic plates" that ride on the molten core. When two
of these plates grind past each other, we experience an earthquake, which changes the earths surface (Arnett, 2005). Soil erosion takes place over long periods of time, when rains wash
soil into rivers and into the sea. It may take eons, but erosion and the slow action of river water will finally cut such spectacular formations as the Grand
Canyon. Mercury Mercury is the closest of the planets to the Sun and the densest body in the solar system after Earth (Arnett, 2005). It has an eccentric
(irregular) orbit, ranging from 46 million km from the Sun at perihelion out to 70 million km at aphelion (Arnett, 2005). Until 1962 it was believed that the planet
always kept the same side to the Sun, but we know now that it rotates "three times in two of its years" (Arnett, 2005). The motion of the planet
