So, too, do all works of literature, for in order to present a story, it must be told from a particular point of view, or perspective. The work can present either a singular viewpoint from a third-person narrator or observer, or can allow the story to unfold from several differing angles, or can be told by one of the major characters. Point of view can be either subjective or objective, depending on how close the narrator is to the characters involved in the story. The particular point of view of a work is, perhaps, the most crucial literary component, for it shapes how the story is told, influencing exposition, prose, style, tone, plot, theme, and characterizations. By comparing and contrasting three very different literary works, Jane Austens early nineteenth-century novel, Pride and Prejudice, Victor Hugos mid-nineteenth-century novel, Les Miserables, and Wallace McRaes late-twentieth-century poem, "Reincarnation," the importance of point of view in the development of these respective works will be illustrated. Exposition is an exploration of the background of a particular work, which provides much insight into a works point of view. Jane Austen was one of the most popular English romantic novelists of her time. She was also a committed social activist who was very much concerned about issues of gender and class.
