literature, there have been certain novels and plays that can truly be considered timeless. This is not merely for the compelling stories they tell, but also because of the
memorable characters they feature, for it is they who breathe life into these stories. Some of the greatest characterizations were crafted long ago by authors who lived in completely
different centuries; and yet, the complex personalities and very human flaws of these protagonists enable contemporary readers and audiences to readily identify with their trials and tribulations. On the
surface, it might appear as if Charlie Marlow and Mr. Kurtz, the primary characters in Joseph Conrads 1902 novel, Heart of Darkness, would have very little in common with William
Shakespeares seventeenth century tragic creations, King Lear and Earl of Gloucester. After all, Marlow was an adventure-seeking English sailor in the Congo and Kurtz was an enigmatic white mercantile
agent turned tribal god, while King Lear was an 80-year-old monarch on the verge of retirement, and Gloucester was is wise old crony. However, while the differences may appear
quite obvious, if one probes them more deeply, these characters reveal striking similarities worthy of analysis. Charlie Marlow is an intelligent and highly-principled man who has seen much of the
world from his yawl, the Nellie. He embodies all of the qualities of a great leader, strong and courageous man, modest about his accomplishments, dedicated to hard work and
committed to leading his crew men by moral example. Marlow is also a philosophical man given to profound insights about human nature. During his time in Africa, nicknamed
