a product of austere New England Calvinism while OConnor was a devout Catholic from the Deep South. Both writers were concerned about human beings living moral lives on earth
in order to attain for their souls eternal life in the hereafter. Each questions in their respective short stories - Hawthornes "Young Goodman Brown" and OConnors "A Good Man
is Hard to Find" - the strength of their protagonists religious convictions and whether or not they are genuine or if they are simply embraced as a way of assuring
their place in heaven. The messages these authors are trying to convey are strikingly similar, and can be found within the storytelling structure itself, specifically the narrative, plot, characterization,
and the use of symbolism as they ponder what it means to be a good man from a religious and moral standpoint. They also serve to illustrate the authors
own value systems. Both "Young Goodman Brown" and "A Good Man is Hard to Find" are stories that employ a narrative style known as a religious allegory, which simply means
that they can be interpreted literally and symbolically. Both allegories describe a journey, which is reminiscent of the one Jesus Christ traveled into the wilderness in order to achieve
moral clarity. Hawthornes title character journeys into a forest near his home, and is by all appearances just as his name implies, a good man. He is married
to a fine woman, and his family has long been regarded as spiritual pillars of the community, which Brown feels compelled to mention at every opportunity. He feels this
straight and narrow path from which the Browns have steadfastly refused to deviate has made him a good man. And yet the protagonist inexplicably finds himself drawn toward another,
