by singer/actress/director/producer Barbra Streisand, and Conroy was hired to co-write the screenplay with Becky Johnston, there were problems aplenty, not the least of which was condensing 800 pages into a
cohesive film that loses none of the emotional intensity of the book. There is also the issue of the books heavy reliance upon protagonist Tom Wingos narrative, replete with
vivid descriptions of the members of his dysfunctional family - his abusive shrimp fisherman father Henry; his eccentric, social-climbing mother Lila; his emotionally troubled twin sister Savannah; and his tragically
heroic older brother, Luke - and stirring recollections of the idyllic South Carolina landscape, which the Wingos had called home for generations. While some of the novels dialogue lent
itself to lush visual imagery, much of it had to be extracted, much to the displeasure of the novels rabid cult following. The novels psychological themes include the impact
of the unconscious mind, especially repressed childhood memories on adult lives, perceptions and relationships. In both the novel and the film, the event of Savannahs hospitalization after a second
suicide attempt and Toms journey to New York to assist her psychologist, Dr. Susan Lowenstein, in her treatment, is the catalyst that generates both the action and the conflict.
However, director and star Barbra Streisand, in her efforts to become the focal point of the story, steers the drama away from Toms family life - his troubled past relationships
