destroyed individuality and creativity and those who dared to be different were destined to be alienated and ostracized from the rest of society. In Hawthornes short story, "The Ministers Black Veil," Reverend Hooper becomes alienated from his congregation when he inexplicably begins obscuring his face from view. As a result, his congregation begins distancing themselves from him. In Melvilles "Bartleby, the Scrivener," the only contact his protagonist has with the rest of the world is when he works as a copier of documents. Otherwise, he keeps completely to himself and he becomes an anomaly to all who come in contact with him. What causes Reverend Hooper to don his black veil is unknown to the church community. It seems as if suddenly, overnight, his young and handsome face is shrouded in black. Perhaps this was his way of yielding to the pressure of being a so-called man of God, one who by virtue of his vocation, was separated from his parishioners because of his special calling. He would be the compassionate listener to the sins of others, and because they would not see judgmental or disapproval eyes looking back at them, his congregation began more freely expressing their sinful temptations to the minister. The cause of Reverend Hoopers alienation, it would appear, was not any sin he harbored within; but instead, was the outward representation of the sin of humanity. It was the visible sign of the dark side of the human character, the one most people take great pains to hide from the rest of the world. As long as Reverend Hooper wore his veil of collective sin, his parishioners could shed theirs. In sharp contrast, the cause of Bartlebys alienation is a bit more elusive, and Melvilles protagonist ...
