for a strong male presence is frequently expressed in her writing. Young Kate always had a bit of a rebellious streak and one can only imagine what her father
would have thought when she married Oscar Chopin, a Creole cotton plantation owner and businessman from New Orleans. She quickly settled into the role of wife and mother to
a large brew of six children when Oscar was suddenly taken ill and died. Her imaginative writings, which had once served as a kind of therapy for her, now
became a financial necessity for the widowed Kate Chopin. Her life had always been relegated by some authority other than her own, whether it was the Victorian social aristocracy
or the Roman Catholic religion. Chopins writings were the only way she could hope to temporarily free herself from all of the constraints that defined her life. The
Storm written in 1898 and The Awakening published the following year are quintessential Kate Chopin works because they reveal how she was profoundly influenced by the people and situations of
her personal life. They also both frankly present the previously taboo subject of adultery as an act of feminine liberation and feature the vivid natural imagery that characterizes her
sensuous and deeply passionate works of Romantic fiction. These stories demonstrate how Chopin was able to create literary art from her real life. In The Storm and The
Awakening, both of primary male characters are named Alcee (Laballiere and Arobin) and are believed to have been inspired by Chopins real-life friend and neighbor Albert Sampite (Toth 96).
