the Red menace while dissenters organized vocal protests against the Vietnam War and its atrocities against innocent men, women and children. A few months after the North Vietnamese launched
the violent Tet Offensive in January 1968, an act that made it crystal clear that the South Vietnamese would not be victorious, John Waynes film, The Green Berets, was released
to enthusiastic audiences and was resoundingly massacred by a predominantly left-wing media (Chabot). The Green Berets, which the patriotic conservative Wayne not only starred by co-directed and produced, featured
the American military unit that was established during the Cold War for the expressed purpose of fighting "unconventional wars," to adequately train local men to defend themselves against the threat
of communism (Chabot). Waynes character is the dedicated Colonel Mike Kirby, who bristles when asked by liberal journalist George Beckworth (David Janssen) to explain the American involvement in Vietnam
(Chabot). Kirby demands to know whether or not Beckworth has ever been to Vietnam, and the embarrassed journalist is forced to admit he hasnt, but soon remedies that by
accompanying Kirby and his men on a mission to defend their firebase from the Vietcong so that he can finally see for himself the war he has been protesting in
print (Chabot). Throughout the course of the film, Beckworth undergoes an amazing transformation as he sees the selfless heroism of the Green Berets in action. The film emphasizes
