an aging warrior who has been away from his wife Penelope and son Telemachus for a decade. The poem details the tribulations Odysseus must endure to return to his
homeland of Ithaca and enjoy a reunion with his family. Sweeney Todd is the story of Benjamin Barker, who is falsely charged and sentenced to hard labor in Australia
by Judge Turpin, who seeks to possess Barkers wife Lucy and daughter Johanna. Upon his return to his London home under the assumed name of Sweeney Todd, he discovers
that Lucy poisoned herself and that Turpin is now obsessed with the teenaged Johanna, who has become his ward. Seeking revenge, Todd opens a barbershop over Nellie Lovetts pie
shop and begins unsheathing his razor on several innocent and unsuspecting customers. While seemingly quite different on the surface, upon careful analysis there are similarities between the characterizations in
Sweeney Todd and those in "The Odyssey," particularly as they relate to Tim Burtons movie protagonist. Sweeney Todd is actually a composite of Odysseus and Polyphemus (or Cyclops), the protagonist
and antagonist in "The Odyssey." Like Odysseus, Todd is banished from his wife and child. Instead of being sent out to sea (punishment ordered by the sea god
Poseidon for Odysseuss blinding of his son Polyphemus), Todd is forced to endure fifteen years at an Australian labor camp for a crime he did not commit. The only
