its rituals remain except for the two epic poems that continue to define the culture and value structure of ancient Greeks - "The Iliad" and "The Odyssey." Both works
are believed to have been written by the blind poet Homer in approximately 800 B.C., but the actual dates as well as the author himself, remain shrouded in mystery.
There are some scholars who claim that Homer never existed, and that these poems were written by two authors who managed to anonymously slip through the cracks of history.
Nevertheless, encased within the 24 books of "The Iliad" and the 24 books of "The Odyssey" is ancient Greece forever preserved, with all of their heroes and the cultural values
of bygone civilizations untouched by the ravages of time. In "The Iliad," the heroes were warriors who dedicated themselves to the pursuit of excellence. As defined by the society
of the time, this meant being "the best." Because Greece was often at war with its neighboring territories, the warrior became the embodiment of excellence. He characterized what
the exemplary qualities of the quintessential Greek character -- principles, leadership, strength, courage, honor, and a willingness to die so that ideals could live. It was on the broad
shoulders of this classical hero upon which the security of society rested. While the hero walked among other men, he was always very much alone. Homer had much
to do with the contemporary concept of the hero, as glimpsed by the youthful and impetuous Achilleus (or Achilles) in "The Iliad" and the seasoned veteran warrior, Odysseus (or Ulysses)
