Medieval poems were depictions that celebrated the warriors noble cause to keep society safe from destruction. They were based on popular folktales of the time, and there is no
poem that best represents the honorable fight for right than the anonymously written "Beowulf." The society characterized in this epic is one in which "everything is black and white"
and either good or evil (Millspaugh 9). Danish King Hrothgar is regarded as "a good king" of simple but unquestioned ethical values (Millspaugh 9). He is committed to
keeping the peace and generously rewards acts of loyalty (Millspaugh 9). Beowulf, the most courageous of warriors, "is heroism personified" (Millspaugh 9). If Beowulf is almost god-like, Grendel
was the devil incarnate: "At the dawning, as day was breaking, / the might of Grendel to men was known; / then after wassail was wail uplifted, /
loud moan in the morn. The mighty chief, / atheling excellent, unblithe sat, / labored in woe for the loss of his thanes, / when once had been traced the
trail of the fiend, / spirit accurst: too cruel that sorrow, / too long, too loathsome. Not late the respite; / with night returning, anew began ruthless murder; he recked
no whit, / firm in his guilt, of the feud and crime" (II 12-22). When Hrothgar begs for Beowulfs assistance in battling the bloodthirsty monster that is viciously attacking
