had entertained audiences for centuries were gradually being replaced by more cutting-edge fare. The concept of "naturalistic plays" began not on the British stage but in Scandinavia, when Norwegian
playwright Henrik Ibsen (1849-1906) and Swedish dramatist August Strindberg (1849-1912) began exploring contemporary life in brutally uncompromising terms. Ibsens naturalistic plays were considered more realistic because they focused on
social issues and their effect on individuals while Strindbergs works were more psychological in nature and concentrated on the impact of sexual tension on both genders. The critical and
popular acclaim of these naturalistic plays were not lost on British playwrights, and by the next century, George Bernard Shaw (1856-1950) who had established a reputation as the premiere playwright
of his age embraced the style by making it his own. Later, Terence Rattigan (1911-1977) picked up the torch by producing some of his own naturalistic plays. Shaws
Mrs. Warrens Profession (1902) and Rattigans Flare Path (1942) represent the authors unique approaches to theatrical naturalism and the directions in which naturalistic plays evolved at the close of the
Victorian era. The real was a more somber ode to Ibsen with social demands on the individual occupying center stage, while the romantic featured true-life situations but preferred a
more sentimental or whimsical interpretation of the subject matter. But both featured characters dealing with social issues relevant to the times and situations aimed at achieving amicable plot resolutions.
