etched on the Mesopotamian tablets that comprise The Epic of Gilgamesh. The friendship between Uruks King Gilgamesh and the nature man Enkidu was one of conflict, mutual understanding, and
ultimately of loyalty. This epic exploration of male bonding would appear - at least on the surface - to have little in common with the 1992 film, Waynes World.
However, the two buds featured in this raucous comedy, Wayne Campbell and Garth Algar, also have a deep masculine bond that is stretched but never broken. With more
similarities than differences, a comparison of these male friendships illustrate that while the times seem to change, the masculine need for kinship remains surprisingly the same.
If anyone needed a friend to set him on the right path, it was Gilgamesh. Because he is part man and part God, Gilgamesh believes he
has the right to do anything he pleases, even if this includes with pillaging the local women, sleeping with them in their marital chambers on their wedding nights (and before
their husbands can consummate their marriages). There were so many complaints from the Kings subjects that they implore the creation goddess Aruru to create a man mighty enough to
subdue him if necessary: "It was you, Aruru, who created mankind, now create a zikru to it/him. Let him be equal to his (Gilgameshs) stormy heart, let them
be a match for each other" (Anonymous 5-6). She responds by creating Enkidu, who is half-man and half-beast. While Gilgamesh is clearly a product of civilization - if
not social conditioning - Enkidu is a creature of nature. He knows little about the ways of the world until he is enticed by the harlot Shamhat. Now
