and early twentieth century in which Norwegian-born author Henrik Ibsen lived and wrote. There was still a rigid social patriarchy firmly in place, and women were denied full participation
on the basis of their gender. The social laws were, quite simply, written by men for men. Women had little choice except to suffer in silence and do
what they were told. Fortunately, there were a few men who took notice of this socially oppressive exclusion. Sophocles addressed the gender injustices of the Greek patriarchy in
the titled heroine of his tragedy, Antigone; Ibsen used the character of Nora Helmer to express his contempt with the laws of male chauvinism in A Dolls House. Both
these characters examine these womens struggles with their respective societies and insightfully considers why the needed to break free from the established laws and conventions. In Antigone, the warring
society of Thebes was the ultimate mans world. While men were fighting over territory and ideals, women were expected to preserve home and hearth in their absence. They
were supposed to be seen and not heard; it was inconceivable from a woman to deviate from the laws of men. However, Antigone dared to do just that.
Her brothers Polyneices and Eteocles fought on opposite sides and when both were killed in combat, Antigones uncle, King Creon, decreed Eteocles would be accorded a heros funeral while the
body of Polyneices, the leader of rebel forces, would be left to decay and be desecrated as animal and insect food. For Antigone, this was intolerable for she believed
