characters in Chinua Achebes short story, "Marriage is a Private Affair" and Sherman Alexies "The Lone Ranger and Tonto Fistfight in Heaven." In Achebes story, Nnaemeka, the son of
Ibo tribesman Okeke, was torn between staying loyal to his tribal rituals and the modern concepts associated with the more urbanized society of Lagos. While in Lagos, Nnaemeka fell
in love with a local schoolteacher, Nene Atang, and the couple planned to marry. However, Okeke had other plans for his son. It is recommended that the student
who is writing about this topic consider that in accordance with Ibo custom, the family patriarch would select his sons mate for her. The son would have no say
