and Russia were practically mirror images of each other in terms of inner turmoil caused by repressive regimes. Although there were a few idealists in both countries that clung
to the hope democracy was still possible, many members of the aristocratic classes were growing increasingly cynical. French poet Alfred de Musset (1810-1857) and Russian poet/novelist Mikhail Yurievich Lermontov
(1814-1841) were two such disillusioned young men who had become embittered by the hollow promises of their political leaders. They decried what they regarded as social decay, and frequently
sought solace in nature, which they believed was the only place on earth that remained pristine and untainted by government tyranny. De Mussets 1836 novel Confession dun Enfant du
Siecle (Confession of a Child of the Century) and Lermontovs novel A Hero of Our Time (originally published in 1840 but published again in 1841 with an authors second preface
added) were extremely autobiographical works that spoke to the disgruntled youth of their generation. They revealed their own personal disenchantment with their respective societies and portrayed these ills through
frequent metaphors of malaise. They made several references to suffering from various maladies including boredom and apathy. Both texts featured protagonists much like themselves, and chronicled these men
from the hopeful beginnings of their youth into the hopeless bleak despair of adulthood. A verbal confession is a way of easing a guilty conscience, of completely breaking away from
the past in order to embrace the future. A literary confession is much the same, and in his first-person narrative, Alfred de Musset confesses his dissatisfaction with the world
