The company achieves this with its own brand as well as some subsidiary businesses units; namely Banana Republic and Old Navy brand names. The Gap brand include; Gap, GapKids, babyGap,
GapBody and Gap Outlet (The Gap Inc, 2002). Founded by Donald and Doris Fisher in 1969 Gap is an American company that has head offices in San Francisco. Starting with
a single store the company now has 4,100 spread across six countries; The United States, United Kingdom, Canada, France, Germany, and Japan employing 166,000 workers (The Gap
Inc, 2002). The company appears to wish to differentiate itself in terms of style colour and service. The way that Gap Inc have positioned themselves has been as a company
of a premium retailers where shopping is an experience rather than simply a task. The current strategy appears to be one of growth that is taking the company into
new markets, as seen with the development of business units such as Old Navy. If we consider the development of Gap Inc. in the past we can see how
the strategy of growth has been realised, and this may give an indication of the future developments that maybe seen to occur. Founded in 1969, the company went to
the stock exchanges in 1976, issuing 1.2 million shares. The company philosophy is shown the following year when the company launches its charitable foundation; The Gap Foundation (The Gap Inc,
2002). From this time forward we see a very clear growth strategy with carefully targeted acquisitions as well as organic growth. The first acquisition was in 1983 and coincided with
