It may be argued that mission is important for a business, but that it is not always the first stage in the strategic management process. In order to consider
the role of mission and its place in the strategic management and planning process it is necessary to consider the concept and importance of mission within the strategy processes.
Mintzberg (et al, 2003), argues that the typical pattern seen in the foundation of an organisation is when there is the identification of the mission by the prime mover finding
the firm. The mission is the provision of the service or goods. Following his identification of prime mover gathers others around themselves in order to accomplish that mission (Mintzberg et
al, 2003). A number of organisations have been founded in this manner; one example is that of Dyson; the founder James Dyson was on a mission following his development of
a bagless vacuum cleaner. After touting the idea around a number of electronics firms and been rejected he set up a company with the mission of selling bagless vacuum cleaners
(Dyson, 2000). Many entrepreneurs who set up their own companies will be on a mission due to a high level of belief in their idea or product; if this is
the case then it appears clear that mission will be one of the first stages in strategic management of the company. However, not organisations are founded by entrepreneurs on a
mission, companies may create subsidiaries and some organisations may be set up to other means, such as the result of government policy and legislation. In many cases an examination of
