of various plant species into an area is dependent on a variety of factors. These include the specific evolutionary adaptations of the particular plant and the ecological parameters that characterize
the area in considerations. Numerous ecological areas offer opportunities for the study of the interrelationship that results. One of the more interesting is those areas created by the
advance and retreat of glaciers. Hodkinson, Coulson, and Webb (2003) report that vascular species do not typically arrive in such regions for some one-hundred years! These researchers hypothesize that:
these species ultimately invade the area in particular patterns and that these patterns
are predictable according to the age of a particular morraine. Hodkinson, Coulson, and Webb (2001)
note that vegetative patterns are established largely by organisms such as lichens, mosses, and microbes that established in the area well before the arrival of vascular species. To demonstrate
the clear transition that characterize these areas, these researchers chose several of the least disturbed glacial morraines in the high arctic and set out to describe the chronological development of
those areas in terms of both animal and plant communities. The made linear extra-polations between known glacier fronts from 1995, 1990, 1977, 1971, 1969, 1966, 1948 and 1936 and
the chosen areas. Paying considerable attention to soil composition, they then radiocarbon dated the lowest organic horizon at the sites and compared their vegetative composition to the site age.
