However, the ramifications of living in a particular community can vary from beneficial to detrimental, and everything in between. Therefore, understanding the role that community plays in the lives of individuals affords us the opportunity to examine the benefits and drawbacks of such membership. Belonging to a community provides individuals with many benefits and opportunities. In this way, the people of that community will often feel as if membership in the community is beneficial in their lives (Julian, 1997). Communities empower people and the social support that exists inherently within the community structure provides the individuals of that community a clear benefit in regards to promoting the well-being of its members (Julian, 1997). Communities offer their residents the opportunity to belong to a cohesive whole, and the whole provides a variety of social services and benefits (Julian, 1997). Communities are not always necessarily physical locations, such as towns. For instance, a community can be within a religion, within a club, within a school organization, etc. A community exists whenever people come together for a common purpose and rely upon one another in some way. Therefore, the benefits of a community are a sense of belonging and being with others who share a common purpose and/or objective. When a person belongs to such a group, their sense of harmony and happiness is clearly enhanced.
