prevalent in educational settings nationwide, with a diminished focus on academic ingenuity or addressing the needs of varied learner populations. As a result, it can be argued that the
high school setting as it is commonly experienced by most students is not the most effective structure though which youths prepare for college, careers and adulthood. The lack of
preparation or involvement in community service, community integration and community-based learning experiences is a major limitation of the traditional high school model.
Many students leave the high school environment with a degree and little more. The complaint that recurs over and over again in the literature on this subject is that
the intense pressure placed on students and educators by standardized testing causes teacher to "teach to the test," that is, virtually all classroom time and resources are devoted to covering
only the material that will be on the standardized test while other areas of the curriculum are neglected. It is understandable why this should occur. In California, for example, any
teachers in schools and districts who fail to improve their class scores are "branded and subjected to various indignities" (Posner, 2004, p. 749).
Though meeting performance outcomes is necessitated by modern educational directives and the No Child Left Behind Act, it does not necessarily prepare students for what will happen after they
graduate. Many students enter vocational schools or the workforce directly after high school and all graduates become a part of some kind of community once they have left school.
