Community reaction in times of stress can have numerous similarities even when the specifics of the stressful event vary significantly. These similarities revolve around misunderstandings, power imbalances, and lack of communication. These similarities can extend across time as well as region. To illustrate the point presented above, first consider a contemporary community that is dealing with the fact that a sexual predator that was convicted for his crimes and served his time in prison is now being released to move into their neighborhood. The second involves community reactions against black coal miners between 1780 and 1980. Obviously these stressors are very different but the community reaction in both is based largely on misunderstandings and concerns over power issues. In both situations the communities in question do not fully understand the ramifications of what they are dealing with and in both there are concerns that they will be adversely impacted by individuals that they have reason, whether real or imagined, of which to be fearful. These perceptions sometimes result in serious and long lasting societal problems. Lewis notes, for example, that in the latter situation: "Social relations in the northern coal communities were severely strained by the importation of black strikebreakers from the South, and these tensions carried over into the fledgling UMWAs local and district organizations".
