The old approach to crime was to make the punishment so severe, and the potential for being caught committing the crime so high, it would serve as a deterrent. Numerous studies were conducted in the twentieth century, in fact, that concluded that this combination was the most effective way towards addressing crime. Today, however, there is some dissension over the validity of the findings of these studies. The intent of this paper is to compare and contrast the various options, particularly the options made possible through improvements in technology that make such practices as hot spot and directed patrols a more feasible option to police officers. These options can be of exceptional value to improving police effectiveness. Today police are moving more in the direction of trying to form an effective relationship with the community, a relationship that might include approaches as diverse as stepped up patrols in certain problem ridden areas and the implementation of programs that help the communities themselves form the infrastructure and values they need to prevent crime. These new approaches appear to be making a positive difference. It is important to caution, however, that it is only prudent to study the standard models of policing in more depth before abandoning them all together. ...
